MS Access Security

Adding Security to an Microsoft Access databases is not easy, first you should read the MS Access Security FAQ" or SECFAQ which is the recommended approach by Microsoft, this will probably take you a good hour or so.

It covers all the security weaknesses and the methods you should follow in the different versions of MS Access to add security, this process is quite time consuming and not easy to understand or follow.

Basically the problem with MS Access security is that Access wasn't designed to be secure, it was designed to be easy to use and learn. Therefore to add MS Access security the database itself must be radically changed from its roots.

For example the default the msaccess database (or MDB) uses the Admin user account, when ever any transaction is made to the database, even though you probably aren't aware of it. The Admin account is flawed when it comes to applying security; by design it can be accessed to change the security of the database. Therefore to combat this problem and add the first layer of security the Admin account must be eradicated as much as possible and replaced my a super user which can be restricted once security is added at the final stages of the securing process.

This example hopefully shows what must be done to a database to add the first level of security.
